THE AMSTERDAM - BASEL CREATIVE COLLECTIVE

New Amsterdam Jazz invites musicians to apply for The Amsterdam - Basel Creative Collective:
an exchange program between two Higher Music Education institutions, artistic scenes, and cultures.

Under the guidance of acclaimed professors Lionel Loueke of the Jazz Institute of the Hochschule für Musik Basel FHNW at JAZZCAMPUS and Tineke Postma of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, current MA students and recent graduates (graduated MA-alumni in 2018 or later from the Hochschule für Musik Basel FHNW or BA/MA-alumni graduated in 2018 or later from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam) are invited to apply and take part in a carefully curated ensemble consisting out of 5 students/alumni of each school. The Creative Collective focuses on composition and improvisation for said ensemble during two exchange weeks.

During the first Exchange Week (November 2023), the ensemble will rehearse, perform and record at the facilities of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and during the second Exchange Week (March 2024), the ensemble will rehearse, perform and record at JAZZCAMPUS Basel.

  • Musicians are eligible to apply if the following criteria are met:

    - Applicants are current MA students or recent MA graduates (in 2018 or later) of the Jazz Institute of the Hochschule für Musik Basel FHNW or recent MA/BA graduates (2018 or later) of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam

    - Applicants are able to attend both exchange weeks and additional workshops/meetings.
    WEEK 1: November 14th - 17th 2023(Travel on Nov 13th + 18th 2023)
    WEEK 2: March 4th - 7th 2024(Travel on March 3rd + 8th 2024)


    - Applicants hold experience and interest in composing or arranging

    - Only applications sent in between May 11th and June 19th will be taken into consideration;

    - Only application forms that have been submitted through the provided form will be taken into consideration

  • - Experience and/or strong interest in composing and arranging

    - Well-written motivation letter with intended goals

    - Our non-profit believes in the values of intergenerational pollination (working with musicians of all ages) and cares about diversity & inclusion in each of the projects we support or help develop.

    *Participants are required to reserve time and energy for this exchange project. Additional input and assignments will be given throughout the exchange project phase. Participants need to be reliable in both musical commitment and communication.

  • - All international travel between Amsterdam and Basel and accommodation costs during exchange weeks will be covered. The transport of instruments needs to be discussed separately; the institutions will aim to provide the visiting students with the necessary instruments in order to avoid travel issues

    - Participation in the Creative Collective is free of charge for all participants. Personal spending for food and drinks is at the expense of the participants

    - Participants do not get compensation for partaking in the Creative Collective

  • Saxophonist and composer Tineke Postma, Rising Star for soprano saxophone in the American Downbeat Polls 2019, tours internationally as a leader and featured guest.

    She released eight albums as a leader which received great critical acclaim. Her last album Aria will be released in May 2023 by Edition Records featuring Ben Monder, Robert Landfermann, and Tristan Renfrow. Tineke’s personal style can be described as lyrical, melodic, and adventurous.

    Tineke is part of two Grammy-awarded albums by Terri Lyne Carrington ("The Mosaic Project") and Dianne Reeves ("Beautiful").

    Tineke also received various awards such as the Jazz Juan Revelations Award” (2009 Antibes Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival), an Edison National Category (2011) for the Tineke Postma Quartet album “The Dawn of Light” and the prestigious Buma Boy Edgar Award (2015).

    Tineke worked with groups of prominent artists such as Kenny Barron, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding (Tineke’s album The Dawn of Light features Esperanza on one track), Dianne Reeves, Geri Allen, the Metropole Orchestra and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw.

    In 2012 Tineke joined the Global All-Star Concerts of International Jazz Day at the Assembly Hall of the United Nations in New York with Wayne Shorter and in 2018 in Melbourne, Australia with Herbie Hancock. In December 2018 she performed with Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, and the Wayne Shorter Quartet for Wayne Shorter who received a Kennedy Honors Award at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

    Tineke studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Manhatten School of Music (2002) and lived in NYC from 2009-2013. Currently, she is based in the Netherlands.

    She is part of the saxophone faculty of the Codarts Conservatory Rotterdam and also teaches at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

  • Prof. Lionel Loueke was born in Benin in 1973. He studied at the Institute of Art in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) as well as at the American School of Modern Music in Paris. With a scholarship, Lionel Loueke then went on to study at the Berklee College of Music. After graduating from Berklee, he was accepted to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (now the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz) in Los Angeles.

    Early on, he started performing with Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden and Chick Corea. He also started collaborating with singer Gretchen Parlato, who was a fellow student at the Thelonious Monk Institute.

    Soon after his time at the Monk Institute, Lionel Loueke began focusing on nylon-string acoustic guitar, an instrument on which he's developed a signature voice.

    Lionel Loueke is a critically acclaimed artist and has won prestigious awards and accolades, among others an Edison for his album Mwaliko with Angélique Kidjo, Richard Bona, Esperanza Spalding, and Marcus Gilmore. His first release for Blue Note, Karibu, featured his longtime friends and collaborators Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

    Prof. Lionel Loueke is a committed educator and is teaching main subject guitar as well as ensemble classes at the Hochschule für Musik Basel FHNW (Jazzcampus).
